Recital of Vande Mataram is controversial issue: Shabana

Azamgarh, Nov 7 : Bollywood actor and social activist Shabana Azmi today said recital of the National Song Vande Mataram was a controversial issue that should not be inflammated for the peace of the country.

''The politicians and presspersons should not rake-up such issues, which are a matter of debate and only create controversy,'' Ms Azmi said visiting her native Mizvan village in this Uttar Pradesh district in relation with the upcoming fashion show in Mumbai.

Discussions on singing the National Song could hamper the communal harmony of the nation, she observed.

Expressing concern over the assault on women, the actor said such crimes need an urgent check.

Taking the name of UP Chief Minister Mayawati, Ms Azmi said the CM of the state was herself a woman and therefore, she should lay more emphasis towards the well-being of the women fraternity.

Women needed to be educated as literacy was the best medium to get rid of the menaces and social evils, she claimed.

The bollywood actress was here in connection with the December 15 fashion show in Mumbai, in which the girls of the village would also participate.

Renowned fashion designer Anita Dogde also accompanied her.

Ms Azmi also rided and distributed bi-cycles among the girls on the visit.
