BJP protests at Town Hall; demands revocation of DTC fare hike

New Delhi, Nov 7 : Continuing their protest against rising prices and the hike in DTC fare, the BJP today held a demonstration at Town Hall in Chandni Chowk calling upon people to raise their voice against the government's 'anti-poor' policies.

Wearing garlands of vegetables, local and national leaders of the BJP, along with their party workers raised slogans against the inefficiency of the government and lambasted its national leaders for commenting irresponsibly.

Citing in this regard a statement of Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, Leader of the Opposition in Delhi Assembly Vijay Kumar Malhotra said, ''It is painful that instead of attempting to control the price rise, Ministers in the UPA government shamelessly declared that it would continue for the next three-four months and cannot be stopped.'' Prof Malhotra also alleged that the government was colluding with the hoarders and cheating the people.

Addressing the demonstrators, BJP All India General Secretary, Vijay Goel, making comparison of the present government with that of Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government, said, ''The prices of essential commodities have gone up four to five times since our government fell in 1998.'' ''Budget for Commonwealth Games was Rs 800 crore but due to inefficiency of the government it has now been increased to Rs 1,600 crore. Its an utter wastage of public money. That extra money could have been used for public welfare,'' Mr Goel Said.

Addressing the protestors, Delhi BJP president O P Kohli asked the government to explain ''why no enquiry was made into reasons of loss in the DTC.'' He said as transport was in the state list and state government was responsible for it, any enquiry into the matter could have unearthed the discrepancies and corruption that prevailed in the transport department.

''How can common people afford such higher fares in buses as their incomes did not increase in a proportionate manner,'' Mr Kohli complained.

Delhi BJP Secretary Veerender Sachdeva appealed to the people that they should fight for their rights and question their representatives in the Assembly why the prices are going higher and higher.
