Torrential rains continue to batter South Tamil Nadu
Madurai, Nov 7 : Even though the torrential North East monsoon rains continued to batter several parts of Tamil Nadu for the fifth consecutive day today, it brought cheers to farming community, as major reservoirs, tanks and other bodies are fast filling up in southern districts of the state.
The quantum of rain in Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar and Sivaganga districts has come down sharply this morning, bringing relief to the people.
Official sources said Periyar reservoir recorded 19 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours. The level of the dam stood at 121.20 feet, as against full capacity of 136 feet this morning, with an inflow of 4345 cusecs. The discharge was 1200 cusecs.
Similarly, the water level in Vaigai dam stood at 58.99 feet, this morning against its full capacity of 71 feet. The inflow was 1706 cusecs and the discharge was 1660 cusecs.
The rains have not wraught much havoc to the crops in southern districts, as preliminary works for plantation of various crops have just begun.
In Tirunelveli, where heavy rains continue to lash, the Tamiraparani river was in spate. The district administration has advised the people residing on the banks of the river to move to safer places and has geared up its official machinery to meet out any eventuality.
In Ramanathapuram district, about 150 houses for the tsunami-affected fishermen in Chinnapalam and Therkuvadi coastal hamlets have started leaking, owing to heavy rains.
