Rains helps to improve storage level in reservoirs
Chennai, Nov 7 : The incessant rains during the current spell of north-east monsoon has helped to improve the storage level in four reservoirs on the outskirts of the city, which cater to the drinking water needs of the city.
The inflow into the reservoirs had witnessed a sharp increase after the catchment areas of Red Hills, Chembarambakkam, Ponneri Cholavaram and Poondi received good rainfall during the last two days.
Red Hills received the highest rainfall of 15 cm, followed by Chembarambakkam 14 cm, Ponnery 13 cm, Cholavaram 11 cms and Poondi nine cm, weather office here said.
Chembarambakkam lake received an inflow of 2153 cusecs, followed by Poondi 1229 cusecs, which included 460 cusecs of Krishna water, Red Hills 696 cusecs and Cholavaram 220 cusecs.
This has helped to improve the water level to 1181 mcft in Red Hills, against the total capacity of 3300 mcft, 257 mcft in Cholavaram, against its total capacity of 881 mcft, 1229 mcft in Poondi, against its total capacity of 3231 mcft and 2153 mcft in Chembarambakkam against its total capacity of 3175 mcft.
Tiruvallur District Collector V Palanikumar, accompanied by T Kannan, Executive Engineer, Water Resource Organisation Division, inspected the Poondi Reservoir this morning.
He instructed the officials on various steps to be taken during the monsoon.
He told newspersons that Chief Secretary K S Sripathi spoke to him over video-conferencing and the district administration was fully geared to meet the situation.
So far there was no loss of human lives or cattles in the district, as most of the tanks in the districts were empty, so the rains were welcome, he added.
