Centre's order on sugarcane price has confused farmers: Jaya
Chennai, Nov 6 : Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today said the Centre's recent order, revising the Minimum Price for sugarcane to Fair and Remunerative Price has confused the farmers and urged the state government to continue to pay the state supportive price over and above the price fixed by the Centre.
In a statement here, she said the Centre, after its recent cabinet meeting on Economic affairs, had announced Fair and Remunerative Price for sugarcane at Rs 1298.40 against the Minimum price of Rs 1070.60.
While fixing the new price, the Centre had made it clear that it was enough if the Sugar mills paid Rs 1298.40, announced by it per tonne of sugarcane to the farmers and the Mills need not pay the state supportive price.
After the Centre had announced Minimum price of Rs 1070.60 per tonne of sugarcane, the state government had announced 359.80 and the farmers were given Rs 1437.40.
Now with the Centre's new order, the farmers faced the danger of losing Rs 139 per tonne of sugarcane and this has created dissatisfaction among the farmers, she said.
Ms Jayalalithaa wanted to know whether the state government would come forward to give its supportive price of Rs 359.80 over and above the new price fixed by the Centre and ensure the farmers get Rs 1658.20 per tonne of sugarcane.
As there had been demand that farmers be paid Rs 2500 per tonne of sugarcane, the state government should come forward to give its supportive price of Rs 359.80, along with Rs 1298.40 fixed by the Centre and ensure the farmers get Rs 1658.20 per tonne of sugarcane, she said.
