Rain toll rises to 13, low pressure intensifies

Chennai, Nov 6 : The toll in rain related incidents in Tamil Nadu rose to 13, with three more deaths reported from districts, even as the trough of low pressure over the South West Bay intensified and moved closer to the state, promising more rains in the next 48 hours.

Reports received here said the majority of deaths occurred due to wall collapses and electrocution.

Villupuram district accounted for three deaths and southern Tirunelveli two. One death each was reported from Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Tiruchirappalli, Tiruvarur, Perambalur, Madurai, Virudhunagar and Kanniyakumari districts.

The weather office sources said the North East monsoon had become active, thanks to the trough of low pressure which was moving closer to the state.

Under its influence, heavy rain was likely to occur over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the next 48 hours and fishermen were advised not to venture into the sea as strong winds with speed reaching 45-55 kmph were likely along the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts.

Several parts of the city came under thick sheets of water as the city and suburbs received steady showers all through the night. The rains were quite heavy in the Cauvery delta districts of Tiruchirapalli, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Nagapattinam and also in southern parts of the state.

Schools and educational institutions in eight districts declared a holiday today due to rains.
