Alappuzha warring ground for LDF, UDF
Alappuzha, Nov 4 :The battle for the byelection to the Alappuzha assembly constituency is hotting up with leaders of both LDF and UDF striving to turn the contest in their favour.
As the campaign ends tomorrow, many political leaders, including Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan visited the town for campaigning.
However, this ancient town, known as the Communist fort, was with the UDF for the last 20 years. But, these failures has not deterred the spirit of LDF workers as top Left leaders, including CPM Kerala unit Secretary Pinarai Vijayan, CPI State Secretary Veliyam Bhargavan and many state Ministers camaigned here for their 'comrade' G Krishnaprasad, the candidate of CPI.
However, the UDF was also vigorous in launcing the campaign led by two Union Ministers, A K Antony and Vayalar Ravi.
Alappuzha is the native district of these Central ministers as well as the Chief Minster.
Besides these two, Opposition leader Ummen Chandy, KPCC President Ramesh Chennithala also campaigned for their candidate A A Shukkoor and highlighted his achievements during his tenure as Chairman of Alappuzha Municipality.
The UDF camp strongly believes that there is an anti-incumbency against the state government as in the last Parliament elections.
The failure of Law and Order in the state and diversion of tsunami funds were their main weapons to attack the LDF.
Meanwhile, LDF Convenor Vaikom Viswan said the comment of Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, relating to deploying Central forces for a free and fair election, was misquoted and misinterpreted.
Addressing a press conference here, Revenue Minister K P Rajendran alleged that the UDF camp was misleading the people by raising allegation on various developmental works.
