Police lathicharge to disperse violent mob at Arambagh

Arambagh, Nov 4 : A mob of CPI(M) supporters today raised road blockades at various places in Hooghly district and tried to stop the convoy of Union Minister of State for Shipping and Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy who was on way to Arambagh.

Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to address a public gathering here later in the day.

Police said Mr Roy's convoy was stopped by the CPI(M) activists at Kableymore resulting in a clash between the cadres of both parties.

The CPI(M) men also reportedly stopped the convoy of Mr Roy at Chapadanga area, pelted stones at police and Trinamool supporters vandalised many vehicles, including police convoys. Police had to resort to lathicharge to disperse the mob.

Meanwhile, Mr Roy managed to reach Arambagh and addressed the rally.

''The Lok Sabha elections stand a clear example of the change that people have been demanding lately and we assure you to bring about the same in the 2011 election,'' Mr Roy said.

Huge police force has been deployed in the rally area and the Tarakeswar-Arambagh road.

Hooghly district has been witnessing violent clashes between the rival parties since Monday as ten people, including a policeman, were injured when CPI(M) and Trinamool Congress activists clashed at Chakvedua, Patul, Langolpara and Isanpara villages under Khanakul police station in this district.

Police said the injured, comprising activists of both parties, were admitted to the Khanakul Rural Hospital.

Police officer Chitranjan Das, who sustained bullet injury, was shifted to the SSKM Hospital in Kolkata where his condtion was stated to be critical, sources said.

The Rapid Action Force, Combat Force and police personnel were rushed to the spot to control the situation. Section 144 CrPC had also been imposed in the areas.

No arrest had been made so far, police said, adding an investigation was on.
