Ministers visit Lankan Tamil Refugee camps in Tamil Nadu
Chennai, Nov 3 : A day after Chief Minister M Karunanidhi directed his Cabinet colleagues to visit the 115 refugee camps in Tamil Nadu housing Sri Lankan Tamils, Ministers from respective districts today inspected the camps for an on-the-spot assessment of the living conditions there.
Accompanied by District Collectors, Food Minister E V Velu, Transport Minister K N Nehru and Backward Classes Minister K K S S R Ramachandran inspected the camps in Tiruvannamalai, Tiruchirapalli and Virudhunagar Districts respectively.
Apart from reviewing the basic amenities in the camps, they also interacted with the refugees who mainly complained of lack of sanitation and basic amenities.
Some of the refugees also told the Ministers they wished to permanently settle down in the state and wanted the government to provide housing facilities and employment opportunities.
The general complaint from the refugees was mainly about drinking water, mosquito menace and stagnation of water, leading to health hazards.
