Karnataka sets precedent in the applications of AD syringes

Bangalore, Nov 3 : Karnataka has set a precedent by becoming the only state in the country to use Auto Disable (AD) syringes in all its hospitals for the past three years, as part of precautionary measures against the spread of deadly diseases, including HIV and Hepatitis.

Mr Marc Koska, who invented the world's first non-reusable syringe and launched a campaign against the use of reusable syringes across various countries, told newspersons here today that of the five billion injections administered in India, every year, 62 per cent were unsafe.

He complimented the Karnataka Government for using and promoting injection safety methods.

Mr Koska, who founded Safepoint, a Charity organisation with a mandate to spread awareness about the application of AD syringes across the world informed that according to World Health Organisation, 1.3 million people die every year through unsafe medical injections of which India accounted for three lakh.

He said the UK-based charity Safe Point which spearheaded a campaign across the globe in November last year, had persuaded the Union Government to make application of AD syringes mandatory in all its hospitals and clinics in the country.

The Safe Point was also sensitising people on the issue and promoting the use of AD syringes, he said.

Stating that the situation in government hospitals in various states was horrible where reusable syringes were being administered on the patients, Mr Koska said it had created a formidable health challenge to meet.
