Airport security tightened following bomb threat

Chennai, Nov 1 : Heightened security has been put in place at the Chennai Domestic and International airports here following a threat that bombs would explode in Air India flights.

The e-mail threat was received at the office of the National carrier in Mumbai.

Following this, a national level alert was sounded and security has been tightened in all the airports in the country.

In Chennai, from where about 37 flights belonging to the National carriers Indian Airlines and Air India operate, tight security measures were put in place.

All the passengers, especially those travelling in Air India and Indian Airline flights, were subjected to thorough checks.

''The passengers and their baggages are being minutely checked'', airport sources said.

Additional personnel were deployed in the check-in area and at the security area before boarding the flight.

Passengers were not allowed to carry any liquid items with them.

Though there has been a ban on carrying liquid items on the ground it might be liquid bombs, it was not strictly enforced.

However, following the threat, the airport authorities have banned carrying liquid items with them.
