India's food security law wins WTO backing

Bali (Indonesia), Dec 6 : India scored a victory on Friday as the World Trade Organisation (WTO) agreed to provide food subsidy without any punitive action in an apparent backing for its questioned food security law.

The move by the WTO comes following opposition by United States and other developed countries to the policy that promises subsidised food to hundreds of millions of poor, as New Delhi held its ground.

India's Commerce Minister Anand Sharma had earlier said that he would endorse a draft trade reform at the WTO removing a major obstacle to a breakthrough.

"It is a victory for the WTO and for the global community to have arrived at a mature decision. We are more than happy. It is a great day. It is a historic day," Sharma was quoted as saying.
