Left slams Mamata over assembly ceremony
The opposition Left Front led by Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in West Bengal on Thursday said the ruling Trinamool Congress government has failed to gather even 75 MLAs in the ongoing platinum jubilee ceremony of the state assembly.
Leader of Opposition Surya Kanta Mishra told a press conference that the government of Mamata Banerjee has organised a four-day programme to celebrate 75 years of Bidhan Sabha but they were forced to boycott it.
"Except for MLAs of the Left Front, the government did not invite the leaders of opposition parties and they did not invite former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya too. So, we had to take this decision," Mishra said.
Mishra said they had sent letters to the West Bengal Governor and the President of India explaining the reason behind their decision to boycott the functions.
Reacting to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's criticism of the Opposition for not upholding democracy by boycotting the functions, he said the government should restore democratic rule in the House first and honour the rights of the Opposition there.
President Pranab Mukherjee will join the closing ceremony of platinum jubilee programme on Friday.
