Scam-accused Malda DM gets bail

Siliguri, Dec 2 : Malda District Magistrate Godala Kiran Kumar was on Sunday awarded a conditional bail by a Siliguri court on Sunday, a day after the judiciary had remanded him four days police custody for alleged involvement in financial scam during his tenure in the Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority (SJDA).

Additional chief judicial magistrate judge H M Rahman after hearing advocate Atri Sharma on behalf of the accused, ordered conditional bail to Godala Kiran Kumar prohibiting him to leave the country.

There was no opposition from the government side in the bail application on Sunday. Goddala Kiran Kumar was handed four days police custody by a court order on Saturday in alleged financial fraud in purchasing close circuit cameras during his tenure at the SJDA between 2011-13.

The IAS officer was grilled by the police in alleged financial scam to several crores of rupees at SJDA, arrested and police remand for four days for him resulting removal of Siliguri Police Commissioner and a second order by the same court got the DM bail.

Siliguri Police Commissioner Kaliappan Jayaraman, who was instrumental in arresting the Malda DM, was removed from his post on Saturday, hours after arresting Godala Kiran Kumar (IAS) fro his alleged involvement in financial scam at the SJDA.

Reacting to this West Bengal chief secretary Sanjay Mitra said the Siliguri Police Commissioner "exceeded his authority" in arresting the Malda District Magistrate. Special IG, Jalpaiguri range, Javed Shamin was asked to take additional charge of the Siliguri Police Commissioner with immediate effect.

Meawnhile, at a farewell reception here on Sunday Kaliappan Jayaram said his removal was a government decision and he would not comment on that. He, however, said whatever he did it was for good of the people and therefore he has no regret for it. Jayaraman was asked to report to Kolkata immediately.
