Mamata wins West Bengal civic polls
The ruling Trinamool Congress on Monday won four of the five municipalities that went to polls last week, with the Left Front losing the Howrah municipality in Kolkata's twin city, and the Congress managing to retain Behrampore in its bastion though TMC made some inroads even there, flexing its political muscle in the state ahead of the general elections in India next year.
TMC thus won in Krishnanagar, Midnapore and Jhargram besides wresting Howrah from the communists.
While Congress retained the municipality in its strongman and junior railway minister Adhir Chowdhury's citadel of Baharampur in Murshidabad, TMC won two wards there as well for the first time.
Left Front also lost the Jhargram municipality after three decades. Of the 17 wards there, TMC won 16 almost whitewashing the Left which managed to win only one ward.
In Midnapore, TMC won 13 of the 25 wards followed by Congress in five wards.
In Krishnanagar TMC won 22 of the 24 wards.
After the win TMC said people would root for them in the general elections next year.
"Mandate of Bengal is loud and clear. This was the last election before Lok Sabha polls. People have supported Mamata Banerjee ," said party senior leader Mukul Roy.
