Kolkata is the principal commercial, cultural and educational hub of eastern India. Known for its revolutionary, literary and artistic heritage, it is also touted as the birthplace of modern Indian literary and artistic thought.
It houses many buildings designed with Indo-Islamic and Indo-Saracenic architectural motifs. Several well-maintained major buildings from the colonial period have been declared heritage structures. Others, however, are in various stages of decay.
