'Fireball' meteor streaks across US sky

Washington, Mar 23 : A large, vibrant meteor shot through the US sky shortly after 7:50 pm on Friday.

The meteor travelled from west to east in the northeast sky, eyewitnesses say.

The American Meteor Society (AMS) has received over 300 reports of the meteor from Florida to Maine, and over 50 reports from Canada.

Some have taken to their Twitter accounts to report the sighting.

@capitalweather yes! It was amazing. A boloid, long streak of yellow and then an explosion of white and green. I'm in Bethesda, saw it East. - Naomi Hart (@naomihart) wrote.

Some even posted the sighting on their Facebook walls.

The accounts suggest that this meteor met the criteria of a fireball - a larger than normal meteor.
