Sweden embassy hosts conference on Tagore

Kolkata, Oct 31 : The Embassy of Sweden as a part of the Sweden-India Nobel Memorial Week (SINMW) 2013 on Thursday hosted 'Tagore, now!' a panel discussion followed by a theatre-installation ensemble here.

The Sweden-India Nobel Memorial Week 2013 celebrated Rabindranath Tagore in the centenary of his Nobel Prize in Literature.

'Tagore, now!' focused on bringing Tagore out of the bookshelf into a stimulating conversation relevant to this day and age.

Moderated by Tagore expert Radha Chakravarty, the panel comprised of academics, scholars and artistes like Prof Ananda Lal, Dr Sanjukta Dasgupta, Swedish Tagore scholar Prof Olavi Hemmila and filmmaker Gautam Benegal.

In the theatre-installation ensemble, director Parnab Mukherjee worked innovatively with Tagore's Nobel acceptance speech and a couple other of his speeches in order to scratch the surface and get closer to the core of the poet/ philosopher/ writer/ internationalist par excellence.

Other events that took place as a part of SINMW 2013 were the Nobel Memorial Quiz, the Nobel Memorial Wall at three Metro Stations and the Spark of Creativity Workshops done in collaboration with the Nobel Museum.

In addition Olavi Hemmila's book 'Tagore in Sweden - 1921 and 1926' was reprinted for the occasion.

Moreover, the Embassy also brought the text of the nomination papers for Tagore's Nobel Prize, in English from the Swedish Academy.

The celebrations around Tagore will continue in New Delhi on Nov 16 when the Sweden India Nobel Memorial Week 2013 ends.
