Researchers claim Apple can read encrypted iMessages

Washington, Oct. 19 : Security researchers at Quarkslab have reportedly revealed that tech giant Apple can read the encrypted content sent through its iMessage service, if it wants.


Quarkslab said that as claimed by Apple that there is end-to-end encryption in iMessage service, the issue is with the key infrastructure and the tech company can change a key anytime it wants and thus gain access to the content.

According to ABC News, the research lab revealed how Apple uses well-known algorithms in its cryptography, and how the company uses the same servers and Push protocol as other services and because the tech giant can control the system, it can very well change it and access the content.

However, the researchers made it clear by their demonstration of the vulnerability that, only if the company wants or made to do so by governmental order, will it read the iMessages.

Meanwhile, Apple slammed the claims and the company's spokeswoman Trudy Muller said that iMessage is not architected to allow Apple to read messages and the claims made by Quarklabs only discussed the vulnerabilities that would require it.

Muller further said that the change in cryptography systems or keys is not something that Apple has plans or intentions to do so, the report added.
