According to a Philippines Inquirer report, more than three million people were affected by the quake with 145 people killed in Bohol as of 6:30 p.m.
However, official records in the afternoon listed 144 deaths.
The epicentre of the quake, which struck at around 8:12 am local time, was located at latitude 9.866 degree north and longitude 124.011 degree east and at a depth of around 20 km, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) website said.
The quake struck north-east of Catigbian city and claimed several lives in the province of Cebu.
Several buildings and churches were damaged due to the quake.
People were seen running into the streets as the quake hit the country on Tuesday morning.
