Madhya Pradesh cabinet minister Kailash Vijayvargiya said that he may decide to not seek re-election for his office.
The minister was quoted in media reports as saying that he was "performing a ritual" over the weekend at a religious function honouring girls in the Western part of the state.
He said that traditionally, the ceremony includes giving money to girls as a way of honouring them.
Leaders of the Opposition in the state, the Congress have asked the Election Commission to censure the minister for violating the code of conduct.
Madhya Pradesh goes for votes on Nov 25.
