"The Prime Minister announced an ex-gratia assistance of Rs.2,00,000 to the next of kin of each of the deceased and Rs.50,000 to those seriously injured in the cyclone, from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund," a PMO statement said.
The Prime Minister reviewed the impact of Cyclone Phailin and the damage caused by it in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and other areas.
"The Prime Minister is relieved to learn that, even though Cyclone Phailin was a very severe cyclonic storm, the loss of life has been contained to a very large extent because of the preventive measures taken in advance," the statement said.
"However, the Prime Minister noted with distress the extensive damage to property, crops and livestock that has resulted from the cyclone. The Prime Minister expressed his sympathies for those who have lost their near and dear ones or have lost their houses, crops or livestock," it said.
Singh also complimented the efforts of the state authorities, district and police administration in all the affected districts, relief workers at the state and district levels, the officers and staff of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) and the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), for the preventive measures they took which resulted in containing the effects of the cyclone on human life.
