Despite rains from the impact of Cyclone Phailin, the morning of Mahanavami commenced with chants and the beating of dhaks (Indian rustic drums) on Sunday.

The day of Mahanavami brings a feeling of gloominess in the hearts of every Bengali as it is observed as the last day of the Durga Puja celebration.

In the morning of Mahanavami, a special 'yajna' (ritual) is conducted with the priest chanting 'mantras' (hymns) .

The Nabopotrika is worshiped along with Noibiddo and flowers.

Special Navami aarti is done on this day to worship the deity,

On Mahashtami night, the rains did not deter the festive frenzy of Kolkatans as the city was glittering with crowds hopping from one pandal (marquees) to the other.

At Kolkata's well known puja destination Maddox Square, there was hardly a space left in front of the pandal where the revelers could find a space to accommodate themselves.

In the other venues and pandals the picture was not different as huge number of people were seen going around the city.

On Mahanavami, the crowd and the glitter of the city is expected to increase as the city will get engaged in the last day of celebration.
