According to the research done by Boris Yakobson and colleagues from Rice University, Houston, who have calculated the material's properties, carbyne's tensile strength and ability to withstand stretching surpasses "any other known material", the BBC reported.
The study also found that Carbyne's strength is even double the strength of grapheme, which is the flat sheet of carbon atoms that is often held up as a "supermaterial."
Carbyne is a chain of carbon atoms held together by double or alternating single and triple chemical bonds.
Scientists have claimed that carbyne has twice the tensile stiffness of graphene and carbon nanotubes and nearly three times that of diamond.
The researchers said that the material can be turned into a magnetic semiconductor and used as a sensor to detect twisting.
The findings of the research have been published in the journal ACS Nano.
