The 30-share benchmark index ended 265.65 points higher at 20,249.26 with 25 of its components closing in the green.
The broader 50-share National Stock Exchange (NSE) Nifty index ended 1.33 percent or 79.05 points higher at 6,007.45 on Wednesday.
Financial stocks extended gains on improving prospects of the rupee besides the data of a slimmer trade deficit in September.
Meanwhile in the New Delhi bullion market, gold plunged by Rs 120 to Rs 30,810 per 10 grams while silver lost Rs 280 to Rs 49,670 per kg.
