The incident took place at Dahalapara area in the district, where a speeding truck hit two vehicles around 4-30 am on Thursday, in which at least 29 people were killed and nine others were injured.
All the deceased labourers were travelling in the cruiser vehicles from Dhubri Tamarhat area to Rangia area in Kamrup (Rural) district.
"The speeding truck (WB-25-C-2618) hit the vehicles (AS-17-B-0033, AS-01-AC-8188) at the area, after one of its tyres burst," said a top police official of Barpeta district.
"The deceased labourers used to work in brick kilns. They hailed from Khulkhuli village under Tamarhat police station in Dhubri district," the police official said.
The injured people have been admitted to nearest hospitals. According to reports, five injured people were admitted to Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) and nine at Barpeta Medical College Hospital (BMCH).
Top police and civil administration officials have rushed to the area.
Meanwhile, the police said they have apprehended the driver of the truck.
The deceased people are yet to be identified.
Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi visited to the injured people at BMCH and announced for Rs 1 lakh each to the next kin of deceased people and Rs 25000 each to injured people.
He also ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident.
