Gujarat Assembly passes Lokayukta Bill

Ahmedabad, Oct 1 : The Gujarat State Assembly on Tuesday passed a diluted Gujarat Lokayukta Commission Bill 2013 or the Lokayukta Aayog Bill 2013, which includes no change sought by the state's Governor Kamla Beniwal.

The bill will be sent again to the Governor for her approval.

As per law, the bill will reach the Governor for the second time and she is obliged to sign it or send it to the President of India for the approval.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has been long indulged in a stand-off with Beniwal over the appointment of Justice Mehta as the Gujarat Lokayuta in August 2011.

The bill provides that the state government can choose to accept or reject the Lokayukta's findings.

This provision was objected by Beniwal earlier as the bill will eliminate the governor as well as the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court from the appointment process.

The bill was passed in the Monsoon Session of the Assembly on Tuesday when only Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs were present.

The Congress legislators were evicted from the House on Monday and suspended for two days following ruckus.

An angry Congress reportedly said it would boycott the rest of the session as Narendra Modi's government did not consult them before passing the bill.
