Al-Qaeda's Twitter account suspended week after launch

Washington, Oct. 1 : Al-Qaeda's official Twitter account was reportedly suspended in a week after its launch on September 24.

The official account, @shomokhalislam, garnered more than 1,500 followers since its launch and included many high-profile jihadists.

According to the New York Daily News, the Twitter profile was connected to the online Al-Qaeda forum Shumukh al-Islam.

However, the account which posted tweets in Arabic was deactivated on Sunday and error message stated that the account had been suspended.

Meanwhile, Twitter did not elaborate on the reason for the suspension, citing they do not comment on individual accounts for privacy reasons, however, the site's 'Twitter Rules' section states that an account can be shut down if it is being used to propagate 'violence and threats' or is 'in the furtherance of illegal activities'.
