The 30-share benchmark index ended 61.56 points higher at 19,721.90 with 18 of its components closing in the green.
The broader 50-share National Stock Exchange (NSE) Nifty index ended 0.17 percent or 9.65 points higher at 5,840.55 on Tuesday.
Investors also tracked foreign fund inflows even as caution prevailed driving trade volumes low.
Meanwhile in the bullion market, gold rose by Rs 360 to Rs 30,010 per 10 grams while silver climbed up by Rs 670 to Rs 50,870 per kg.
