According to reports, three suspects, who were dressed in military style uniforms, opened fire at the Washington Navy Yard and one of them was killed at the scene on Monday.
Calling the incident a 'cowardly act', US President Barack Obama said: "We are confronting yet another mass shooting and today it happened at another military installation in our nation's capital."
'We send our thoughts and prayers to all at the Navy Yard who've been touched by this tragedy," he said
Authorities are looking for the other two suspects, reports said.
"Authorities are looking for a white man and a black man in military-style clothing who could be connected to the shooting," CNN reported.
"The big concern for us right now is that we potentially have two other shooters that we have not located," Washington DC Police Chief Cathy Lanier told media.
About 3,000 people work in the building where the incident happened.
Naval Sea Systems Command is the largest of the Navy's five system commands.
It builds, buys and maintains the Navy's ships and submarines and their combat systems.
