Kolkata schoolgirl: Principal gets bail
The principal of a girls' school in Kolkata, who was arrested over an 11-year-old student's death, was released on bail on Monday, said reports.
Principal Helen Sarkar of Christ Church Girls' School was arrested on Sept 12.
Sarkar had apologised and then agreed to resign before getting arrested, after a class 5 student of the school, Oindrilla Das, died on Sept 11.
The girl died allegedly because of trauma after being locked up in a school bathroom by senior students who had demanded Rs 100 from her, which she failed to produce.
According to reports, hundreds of parents ransacked the school, broke furniture and vandalised school records on Sept 12.
Around 4 pm in the day, the principal appeared in the school's first floor balcony with police escorts and apologised to all the parents.
She promised action against those who had bullied Oindrilla.
Two hours later she resigned.
However, it was rejected by the parents who wanted the same on school's letterhead.
After the crowd dispersed, the principal was arrested on the basis of a First Information Report (FIR) filed by Oindrilla's parents.
In the FIR, the parents accused school authorities of failing to prevent bullying, leading to the death of their daughter.
