Crafts Council showcases Durga Puja collection

Kolkata, Sept 15 : : While the festive air of autumn is on the anvil and everyone in West Bengal awaits the annual homecoming of Goddess Durga and her children, the Crafts Council of India brings to Kolkata a great collection of textiles, and much more amid the frenzied puja shopping.


The exhibition was inaugurated on Saturday by elocutionist Urmimala Basu while the tough-acting State Election Commissioner Meera Pandey was also present in the occasion.

Shoppers can choose from the various items for their Durga Puja shopping such as plain and printed Maheshwaris, exquisite collection of textured Tussars and Matka saris from Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh; Shantipuris, Begumpuries and Tangail from Bengal , gossamer-fine Chanderies in the lightest of pastels and exquisite colourful Chettinad saris from Chennai at affordable prices.

Mangalgiri and double ikkat in an unusual colour palette from Andhra Pradesh, Kalamkari saris and dupattas from Ankigam, a huge variety of printed cotton yardage from Jaipur, handblock printed mulmul saris from Akola, cotton handloom weaves from Varanasi and an exclusive collection of Eri silks, Tussars and Mugas from Assam are also on display.



Kasturi Gupta Menon, President, Crafts Council of India, said, "Durga Puja has transcended its status as a festival exclusively from Bengalis, now it is a cause for celebration among one and all. The city wears its most vibrant hues and welcomes visitors from all over. It is a special and warm occasion, and we are happy to present an extensive collection perfect to just up pieces for yourself and also to gift your near and dear ones."

Meera Pandey, who is known for her good collection of saris as captured in media appearances of the state's top election official, said: "It's always nice to come to Kamala because there is such a variegated collection of dress materials, saris and dupatta. The colours and the weaves here are very uncommon. I come to Kamala quite often and I am looking forward to the exhibition."

The exhibition is on at Kamala, Rabindranath Tagore Centre (ICCR, 9A, Ho Chi Minh Sarani) till Sept 21 from 10 am to 7 am.
