England Ashes winner Matthew Hoggard announces retirement from cricket

Johannesburg, Sept 12 : Former England Test and one-day bowler Matthew Hoggard has reportedly announced that he will retire from first-class cricket at the end of the current English season.

The seam bowler, who played in 67 Tests, took 248 wickets and made 93 international appearances in total for England, helped his country win the 2005 series against Australia, which was their first Ashes campaign success since 1986/87.

According to Sport24, Hoggard said that he would call time on his 17-year career on September 21 after Leicestershire's County Championship match against Hampshire, adding that he is honoured to have been given the opportunity to be a part of the national side and is grateful to everyone that he has worked with for the past 17 years.

Paying tribute to Hoggard, Leicestershire chief executive Mike Siddall said that the player, who is eighth in England's list of all-time leading wicket-takers, has had a massive influence at the club during the four years he has been here as he had captained the county to its third Twenty20 Trophy win at Edgbaston in August 2011.
