Second-seeded Spaniard Rafael Nadal defeated the Serb 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 to collect his 13th Grand Slam crown and second title on the New York hardcourts, having also beaten Djokovic in the 2010 final to complete a career Grand Slam.
According to Sport24, Djokovic, who had a 2011 season that was among the greatest in tennis history with his US, Australian Opens and Wimbledon winds, began the year with a 41-match win streak that was snapped by Roger Federer in the French Open semi-finals on the way to a 10-title season.
Believing that the heartache of losing to Nadal again in a US Open final will motivate him to a successful 2014 campaign, Djokovic called the motivation as a part of his life and said that falling as an athlete is a lesson for him to keep on moving forward, adding that he believes that best time for his career is about to come as he is only 26 years old.
According to Djokovic, as long as he believed in himself, the fire of the love of the game will keep burning inside him, adding that he believes that he will play tennis with all his heart in the future like he has been doing for the last ten years.
Djokovic admitted his disappointment at losing to Nadal despite the moments of great tennis that roused cheers from a sellout crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium, adding that they did not outweigh the misery of losing as he wished he had won at least one title more
However, the Serb further said that overall, 2013 was a very successful Grand Slam year for him, adding that he tries to keep this fact in the back of his mind always to keep himself motivated.
Accepting responsibility for his loss, Djokovic, who was undone by 53 unforced errors which let the momentum slip out of his hands, also said that Nadal started playing a better game after that for which he deserved to win.
