IRDP-SGSY Onam Fair '2013 started at Ernakulam
The IRDP-SGSY Onam Trade Fair '2013, also known as IRDP Mela, was inaugurated at the Ernakulathappan Ground premises by Union Minister Prof. K V Thomas on Tuesday.
Self-employed individuals from the block Panchayats of Ernakulam, Idukki, Alappuzha, Palakkad and Thrissur districts are participating in the fair organised by Integrated Rural Development Program (IRDP) with the association of Swarnajayanti Grama Swarojgar Yojana (SGSY) and Kudumbasree units.
This is the best chance to buy almost all Kerala traditional snacks, food ingredients, rare spices, toys, garments, kitchen utensils, slippers, handmade ornaments, tools and knifes, and other items produced in the rural areas of Kerala from under a single roof.
The stalls here has Marayoor Jaggery (Rs 90/kg) , Vattavada Garlic famous for strong flavour (Rs160/kg), Mara thakkali (Wild Tomato) grown in the forests and is believed to be a natural healing remedy for blood pressure, cholesterol and piles (Rs100/kg), Strawberry jam from Munnar (Rs 150 for 500gm), Wild Cardamom (Rs 160 for 100 gm), Kudam Puli (Rs 280/kg), Vaalan Puli (Rs 120/kg), Tea powder from Thalayar Hills (Rs300/kg), Bamboo rice (Rs 350/kg), Passion fruit juice (Rs 225), Muzirus Palada Pradaman, Eucalyptus and lemon-grass oils.
Honey, rice and tapioca pappads, toddy vinegar, Grape wine, ginger and gooseberry syrups are also available.
Even though pickles of all varieties are available, most customers prefer to buy pickles prepared in the traditional method using mango, lemon, dates, jack fruit and prawns.
Pokkali rice, njavara and raggi are available at Thrissur stall. Alappuzha stall has coir products for lowest price while fresh agricultural produces are exhibited for sale at Kattappana stall.
The fair will conclude on September 14.
