"Narendra Modi is a very popular CM and he is being attacked...these attacks have increased after he was chosen election campaign committee chief and we fear more such attacks in the future," Singh said.
"But I think we should all stand strongly and we can use social media in this. We can tell the people how attempts to defame and malign are being made," he added.
Singh, who was addressing a national committee meeting of BJP's Information Technology (IT) cell here, asked the party's 'e-workers' to tell the nation through the social media of these attempts to 'malign' Modi's image.
The BJP chief, who put up a strong defence of Modi, also used the occasion to target the ruling Congress Party at the Centre.
"We need to tell the people through social media that the Congress is the biggest communal party in the country," he said, while asking the BJP's IT cell to highlight the failures of UPA Government among the people.
Singh's comments came five days after suspended IPS officer DG Vanzara, who is in jail for a string of alleged fake encounters, said the Narendra Modi Government in Gujarat had sanctioned the shootings and then abandoned the policemen when they were arrested on charges of murder.
In his 10-page resignation letter to the Additional Chief Secretary of the State Home Department, Vanzara said he was resigning from the service and also renouncing all post-retirement benefits. Vanzara further said that Modi and Shah did not protect Gujarat's policemen while pursuing their respective political agendas, and stated that he was shocked and dismayed over the state government not backing him when his name was linked with the fake encounter cases.
He charged Shah with using the state police machinery to gain political mileage and the ability and right to literally rule the state. Vanzara accused both Shah and Modi of colluding with each other to keep all police officers involved in fake encounter cases in jail to protect themselves.
The Gujarat Cabinet has rejected Vanzara's resignation, saying that it cannot be accepted until all cases against him are closed.
