According to Sport24, Wawrinka has reached the quarter-finals for a second time by beating fifth-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych and will meet defending champion Andy Murray again for a place in the semi-finals on Thursday.
The report further said that the Swiss beat Murray in the fourth round in the 2010 US Open and pushed out world number one Novak Djokovic in an Australian Open fourth round match in January.
Stating that he is playing his best tennis ever, Wawrinka, who had won an Olympic gold medal in doubles with Federer in the 2008 Beijing Games, said that he believed that his Portugal Open win against David Ferrer boosted his confidence to reach the quarter finals in New York.
However, the ninth-seeded Wawrinka also said that he would have preferred to have Federer still playing in the tournament, adding that he hoped that his Swiss compatriot would come back stronger.
Federer is currently at seven in the standings while Wawrinka, who has never featured in the tournament, is on the outside looking in at nine, the report added.
