The 30-share benchmark index ended 332.89 points higher at 18,567.55 with 29 of its components closing in the green.
The broader 50-share National Stock Exchange (NSE) Nifty index ended 2.00 percent or 106.65 points higher at 5,448.10 on Tuesday.
A recovery in the rupee after suspected intervention by the RBI helped spur bargain buying in oversold blue chips.
Meanwhile in the bullion market, gold gained Rs 660 to Rs 32,200 per 10 grams while silver added Rs 70 to Rs 55,500 per kg.
