Bimal Gurung sticks to statehood movement

Darjeeling, Sep 3 : Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) supremo Bimal Gurung on Tuesday said the ongoing movement for statehood in West Bengal will continue.

He made the comment hours after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde appealed to Gorkha leaders to call off the agitation.

Shinde, while assuring a Gorkhaland Joint Action Committee (GJAC) delegation, said that the Centre would soon convene a tripartite meeting to solve the hill impasse.

He also urged them to withdraw the ongoing agitation.

A 10-member GJAC delegation, which was headed by GJM general secretary Roshan Giri, had called the Union Home Minister in New Delhi to apprise the latest situation in the hill.

"The Home Minister has appealed to withdraw the ongoing agitation and come for a dialogue," Gurung said.

Gurung, however, said the GJAC will meet soon and take appropriate action but the movement for Gorkhaland will continue.

Earlier, Mamata Banerjee in a rally at Kalimpong also called upon the Gorkha leaders to end the agitation and start afresh building Darjeeling by electing the chief executive at Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA).
