Shah is out of jail under judicial bail as one of the accused for kidnapping and encounter killing by the State Police of underworld don Sohrabuddin Shaikh, his wife Kauserbi and their friend Tulsiram Prajapati. The latter was believed to be a witness to the encounter killing of Sohrabuddin. Prajapati was killed near Chhapri village in Palanpur on Dec 28, 2006.
Congress said the episode is shameful and Modi, who now heads the campaign of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the 2014 general elections, should resign.
Union Law Minister Kapil Sibal said it is now clear that the killings were a big conspiracy involving senior BJP leaders.
Congress leader Ajay Maken said the matter should be investigated by CBI and till such time Modi should step aside as Gujarat Chief Minister.
The sting operation has been carried out be a supposed freelance journalist named Pushp Kumar Sharma.
Filing a PIL in Supreme Court, he said senior BJP leaders like the key accused Amit Shah, Prakash Javadekar (Rajya Sabha MP and BJP spokesperson, Bhupender Yadav and Ram Lal had conspired to subvert the judicial process in the killing of Tulsiram Prajapati.
He accused that these leaders tried to obtain a blank Vakalatnamas (a signed affidavit permitting appointment of a lawyer to represent a litigant or defendant in a case) from Prajapati's mother Narmadabai so that Amit Shah could get bail.
The BJP trashed the charges and called the CD of the sting as a doctored one and questioned the authenticity of the CD.
Javadekar rubbished the CD and said it is a doctored one to tarnish his image.
