Asaram in 14-day judicial remand

Jodhpur, Sept 2 : Self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, who was arrested by Jodhpur Police on Sunday in a minor's sexual assault case, has been sent to jail after a court remanded him here to a 14-day judicial custody.

Asaram was produced in a court for further remand after the one-day police custody of Asaram ended on Monday. The court sent him to jail custody.

Government lawyer Anil Purohit said Asaram's bail application would be heard on Tuesday at 11 am. The lawyer said he continued to claim that he was framed in the case.

Earlier, Asaram has passed potency test, which establishes that he is medically fit and sexually potent.

The police said they have grilled Asaram for five hours.

However, Asaram has denied being alone in a room with the 15-year-old victim and sexually assaulting her promising to exorcise her of evil spirits.

Police said they were happy with their interrogation at the RAC centre here.

"Asaram Bapu is cooperating with us in the investigation process. We interrogated him for five hours," Jodhpur Police Commissioner Biju George Joseph told reporters earlier.

"Doctors have examined him and said there is no evidence of him being unwell. We have asked doctors to conduct a potency test on him," he said.

"We have to take his version on evidence that we have gathered," he said.

Senior police officer Ajay Lamba said they are happy with the interrogation and enough evidence was collected.

The Jodhpur Police on Sunday brought Asaram to the city, after arresting him on Saturday night from his Indore ashram in Madhya Pradesh in connection with the sexual assault case.

The godman was taken to a Jodhpur police station, where he was questioned first.

According to reports, he has denied the charges.

Reports said the police also had taken him to the scene of the alleged crime in his ashram, 35 km outside Jodhpur, for collection of evidence.

Asaram on Friday had failed to appear before the Jodhpur Police for questioning in connection to the case, leading to his arrest in Indore by Jodhpur Police.

The 15-year-old girl, who was staying at Asaram's hostel in Rajasthan's Jodhpur, has filed a First Information Report (FIR) at Kamla market police station in Delhi alleging she was sexually assaulted by the godman.
