India has over 20.88 lakh HIV sufferers

New Delhi, Aug 28 : India has 20, 88,642 people living with HIV as per an estimation in 2012, said Union Minister of States for Health and Family Welfare Abu Hasem Khan Choudhry in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

As per HIV estimation 2012, the total estimated number of people living with HIV in 2011 in India was 2088642.

Andhra Pradesh is the state that has maximum number of HIV sufferers at 4,19,180, followed by Maharashtra with 3,15,849 people affected by the virus.

The Gross Budgetary Support (GBS) will be Rs 11394/ crore in the 12th Plan. Approximately Rs 7314.46 crore is allocated to be spent on HIV prevention and awareness during 12th Plan period, said the minister in written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.
