New graphene-copper composite 500 times stronger than original metal

Washington, August 28 : Researchers have put graphene's tensile strength to test by using it in a composite that consists of copper and nickel.


The graphene is able to make the copper 500 times as strong as it would be on its own and it makes nickel 180 times as strong, Discovery News reported.

In the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) research, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) was used to grow a single layer of graphene on a metallic deposited substrate, and then another metal layer was deposited on it.

These steps were repeated again, which resulted in a multilayer metal-graphene composite material.

Professor Sueng Min Han said that the results are astounding as 0.00004 percent in weight of graphene raised the strength of the materials hundreds of times.

He said that improvements on these may also help make possible the production of automobile and spacecraft lightweight, ultra-high strength parts.

According to Han, this graphene-metal composite is also capable of being used as a coating in nuclear reactor construction or other structural applications.

The study has been published in the journal Nature Communications.
