West Bengal: Masked miscreants torch car

Darjeeling/Kolkata, Aug 27 : Masked miscreants torched a Nano car after shoving off three women commuters, including a sick, in the hills asmovement for statehood for Gorkhas in Darjeeling took a new turn on Tuesday with the joining of students demanding division of West Bengal.


The police said some masked miscreants on Tuesday morning stopped a Nano car and forced three women passengers out of it before set fire at 3rd Mile on NH 31A.

The miscreants wearing black mask also beat the driver of the car.

The vehicle was heading for Siliguri from Pedong.

The police have arrested four persons, who are accused of setting fire the vehicle and beating the driver.

The current phase of Gorkhaland agitation, spearheaded by the GJM, since July 29 took a new dimension as students and youth joining the movement to make it wide spread across the hills.

Both uphills and downhills of all three sub-divisions - Darjeeling- Kurseong and Kalimpong - overflowed with mass of people with all shops, market, government
offices remaining closed for an indefinite period.

Despite, continued crackdown on the second rung GJM leaders, with so far arrest of 800 people there was no let up and support for statehood was expanding.

In Kolkata, Left Front chairman Biman Bose called for beginning a dialogue with the Centre, state government and the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) to end the logjam.

Mewnhile, the Gorkhaland Rajya Nirman Morcha (GRNM), one of the constituents of the newly formed Gorkhaland Joint Action Committee
(GJAC), has threatened to quit the umbrella association if the GJM did not dissociate itself from the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA).

GRNM president Sawa Pakhrin told during a media conference in Siliguri that they will discuss the issue shortly if the GJM stuck to the GTA,
which will have meeting on Sept 4 to elect a new chief executive after GJM president Bimal Gurung quit the post on July 31.

Earlier, the All India Gorkha League (AIGL) severed its relations with the GJAC on the same issue.
