Mandela showing 'great resilience'

Johannesburg, Aug 24 : Former South African President Nelson Mandela, who is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Pretoria, is in a critical but stable condition,said the country's Presidency on Saturday.


The Presidency said Mandela's condition becomes 'unstable' at times he has shown 'great resilience'.

"Former President Nelson Mandela still remains in hospital in Pretoria and his condition is still critical but stable. While at times, his condition becomes unstable, the doctors indicate that the former President has demonstrated great resilience and his condition tends to stabilise as a result of medical interventions," said the Presidency in a statement on Saturday.

"Doctors are still working hard to effect a turnaround and a further improvement in his health and to keep the former President comfortable," read the statement.

South African President Jacob Zuma has urged South Africa to continue praying for Mandela and to keep him in their thoughts at all times.

"President Zuma will today travel to Malaysia on an official visit aimed at boosting social, political and economic ties with that country which has longstanding relations with South Africa. Among the highlights of the visit will be the awarding of a Lifetime Award for Global Peace to former President Mandela by the Mahathir Global Peace Foundation. President Zuma will receive the award on Madiba's behalf," said the statement.

Mandela was admitted to a hospital in Pretoria on June 8 with a recurrence of lung infection.
