Congress sweeps Karnataka by-polls

Bangalore, Aug 24 : The Congress on Saturday swept the Karnataka by-polls, winning Bangalore Rural and Mandya Lok Sabha constituencies by a huge margin.

Congress MLA DK Suresh won Bangalore Rural constituency by 1 lakh votes defeating former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy's wife and Janata Dal (Secular) [JDS] candidate Anitha Kumaraswamy.

Congress leader and Kannada actress Ramya won Mandya Lok Sabha seat by 50,000 votes.

By-polls at Mandya and Bangalore Rural constituencies were held on Wednesday.

The by-polls were crucial for the Congress as this was the first election in Karnataka after its candidate Siddaramaiah took over as the Chief Minister.

Congress faced one of its strongest rivals in the by-polls - the JDS.
