Political opponents and Western states alleged that 89-year-old Mugabe's re-election was not credible.
According to reports, thousands of supporters, diplomats and delegations attended the swearing-in ceremony here.
"Thursday was declared a public holiday to allow supporters of the 89-year-old to attend the inauguration," BBC reported.
Mugabe won the presidential election with 61pc votes against 34pc received by his main rival Morgan Tsvangirai on July 31.
