Maoists forcibly seizing lands from Odisha farmers in name of development

Koraput (Odisha), Aug.20 In tune with their stated principle of land grabbing, Maoists are forcibly acquiring land from poor farmers and land owners in areas over which they have control.

The ultras have reportedly grabbed 6,000 acres of land from farmers in Bandhgaon and Narayanpatna blocks in Odisha's Koraput District.

Anshuman Behera, a research scholar, claimed the Maoists have overpowered the people and acquired their lands.

"Land grabbing is a stated principle of the Maoists. They grab and acquire land wherever they feel like. Wherever there is a lack of security infrastructure, they overpower the people and acquire the land," he said.

The Naxals claim that profits from the land grabbed would be distributed equally amongst the poor, while experts believe the rebels are using the money to strengthen their cadres and for personal gain.

Behera, however, maintains that the ultras do not distribute anything and use the amount to buy weapons and print posters.

"The leadership is taking the money. So, the poor remain poor. So, to say that the Maoist movement is here to uplift the people, or talking about tribal and Dalit rights, is utter nonsense," said Behera.

"They are here to mobilise the people so that their ambitious project of overthrowing the state, or to capture power in the state through an armed revolution, will be fulfilled," he added.

Shockingly, the Naxals also force farmers to work in the fields in the name of community farming without minimum or no wages.
