According to CBS News, Sarah Thomas, a mother-of-three, will be working at the pre-season game between NFL teams New Orleans Saints and the Oakland Raiders, in her audition as a NFL line-judge.
The report further said that Thomas, who is now in NFL's developmental programme, had already create history seven years ago at the collegiate level, officiating games for Conference USA and was the was the first female official at the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I level, and the first to work a college bowl game.
Stating that she never set out to 'shatter the glass ceiling', Thomas said that she is aware that a number of women may be inspired that a gender-barrier is about to be broken, while joking that although she wears her hair under her cap to blend in, the players notice the difference when they see her mascara and lip gloss and hear her voice.
Although the report said that the NFL is a far cry from college competition in terms of players' sizes, speed and intensity of the game, Thomas however, said that she will keep her cool if she has a 300-pound player yelling at her face and let him know that she was just doing her job.
Stating that gender will not be the deciding factor while choosing an official, NFL's vice president of officiating Dean Blandino said that they are looking for the best officials, whether male or female, adding that if Thomas kept on doing what she has been doing all her life, then chances are good that she will have the job.
