According to Jedi News, a source has revealed that though the specifics of the role remains unclear, Palpatine's character would return either as a clone or as the original, Metro.co.uk reported.
McDiarmid had told USA Today earlier that he didn't think Palpatine would be back in the new films as he died after Darth Vader threw him into the Death Star's reactor shaft in 'Return of the Jedi'.
The 69-year-old Scottish actor said that he had asked George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, if the character was dead and was told that he indeed was.
He added that it was possible Palpatine might have survived, as he might have cloned himself.
